JEFFERSON – Rev. Gerald Alexander Mitton, went home to be with His Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 14, 2015.

Rev. Mitton is better known to most as “Preacher Mitton”. He was born on September 17, 1927, in Wheaton Settlement near Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of the late Frank and Miriam Mitton. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Bagwell Mitton; brother, Vernon Mitton; sister, Myrtle Mitton Seaman; two granddaughters, Holly Fouche and Tiffany Taylor; and a grandson, Alexander “Alex” Mitton.

Preacher Mitton graduated from Tennessee Temple Bible College. He received an honorary Doctorate’s Degree from the Florida Bible College. Preacher Mitton pastored his first church, Maple Springs Baptist Church in Dayton, Tenn., while attending Bible College. He came to be the Pastor of Faith Baptist Church of Jefferson in January 1961 until October, 2003. Preacher Mitton faithfully preached the Word of God and shared God’s love with those he came in contact with on a daily basis.

Survivors include two daughters, Miriam Mitton Taylor and husband, Rev. Roger Taylor, Morgantown, Ky.; Susan Mitton Fouche and husband, David Fouche, Jefferson; a son, Gerald “Mark” Mitton and wife, Amy Lord Mitton, Jasper; seven grandchildren, Carol Taylor. Tyler Mitton and wife, Ashley, Lindsay Mitton Rice and husband Caleb, Samuel and Doug Fouche, and Adam and Amy Fouche; and five great-grandchildren, Damon, Myles, and Addyson Yarnell, and Carson and Rush Mitton.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m., in the Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson with the Revs. Pat Lawrence and Terry Wofford officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. in the Church, prior to the service. The burial will follow in the Woodbine Cemetery in Jefferson. The committal will be officiated by Dr. Bill Carpenter. Honored as pallbearers are Jimmy Benton, Walker Campbell, Derrell Crowe, Jake Murphy, Mike Nabors, Eric Shelton, and Buck Tolbert. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Carpenter, Keith Cudd, Dean Hamby, Ronnie Healan, Fred Kindheart, Jack Lawson, Jessie Mealor, Alex Moon, and Kevin Page. The visitation will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 2 until 7 p.m. in the Faith Baptist Church, 2081 Hwy. 129 N, Jefferson.
