JEFFERSON – Samuel MacArthur “Mack” Cates, 73, entered into rest Saturday, May 16, 2015.
Mr. Cates was born in Crossville, Ala., the son of the late Walter Samuel Cates and Beatrice Dingler Cates. He was a United States Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War, member of the Albert Gordon Post 56 of the American Legion, member and past president of the Jefferson Lions Club, and a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church. Mack was a 1970 graduate of the University of Georgia, a retired health care administrator, an avid Georgia Bulldog Fan, a mentor with Lindsey’s Legacy, and enjoyed playing golf with his two grandsons. Mr. Cates was preceded by a daughter, Christy Cates.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Howland Cates, Jefferson; daughter, Cindy Benton and her husband David, Jefferson; two grandsons, Samuel and Christopher Benton, Jefferson; and one brother, Stanley Cates, Tallapoosa.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, from the Bethany United Methodist Church with William Puckett, Jim Meunier and Rev. Brad Greene officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Gentlemen honored as pallbearers will be Samuel Benton, Christopher Benton, Harold Benton, Clinton Norton, Jesse Norton, and Stan Cates. Members of the American Legion and the Jefferson Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 18.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethany U.M.C. Youth Group, 4659 Brockton Rd., Jefferson, GA 30549.
