Luther Wilkes (11-04-15)

JEFFERSON – Luther Welchel Wilkes, 80, entered into rest Wednesday, November 4, 2015.

Mr. Wilkes was born in Jefferson, the son of the late Worth and Mattie Jackson Wilkes. He was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Unity Lodge # 36, member of the Georgia FFA Alumni Association, a recipient of the National FFA Alumni Achievement Award, and retired as a service representative with J.E.M.C. with 45 years of service. For many years Mr. Wilkes was an active coach and promoter of Pony League and American Legion Baseball in the Jefferson area. Mr. Wilkes was preceded in death by sisters, Laconia Wilkes, Thelma Nabors, and Frances Glenn; and brothers, J.T. Wilkes and Henley Wilkes and his wife, Vivian Simmons Wilkes.

Survivors include a daughter, Camie Wilkes Thomas, Jefferson, Dustin Wilkes, Jefferson; sisters, Carolyn Evans and Connie Hemphill, Jefferson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 7, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Revs. Ross Wheeler and Johnny Ray officiating. The burial will follow in the Bethany Church Cemetery with the following gentlemen honored as pallbearers, Bill Lott, David Calloway, Joe Massey, Bill Ormsby, Brian Patton and Gary Glenn. Honorary pallbearers will be Sid Glenn, Toby Glenn, Tommy Nabors, Andy Wilkes, Tim Wilkes, Jeff Glenn, and Darren Glenn. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, November 6, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Bethany Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 4659 Brockton Road, Jefferson, GA 30549.
