COMMERCE – Miss Emma Sue Thurmond, 88, formerly of Jefferson, entered into rest Wednesday, November 25, 2015.
Miss Thurmond was born in Jefferson, the daughter of the late C.L. and Rowena Dunson Thurmond. She was a graduate of Martin Institute, Class of 1946, and attended Women’s College of Georgia in Milledgeville and Johnson Business College in Athens. Miss Thurmond was a member of the Church of Christ of Lawrenceville, Ga.
Miss Thurmond was the librarian of the Jefferson Public Library for more than 40 years. She established the summer reading program for children in Jefferson and worked tirelessly moving from building to building before the dream of the Jefferson Library being built.
Survivors include a brother, Claudius D. Thurmond and his wife Carolyn, Jefferson; nephews, Phil Thurmond and his wife Susie, and Doug Thurmond and his wife Jackie; great-nephews, Caleb Thurmond and his wife Melissa, Cain Thurmond and his wife Whitney, and Cam, Cason, Tanner and Tyson Thurmond; one great-great niece, Ella Kate Thurmond; a special friend, Welton Cronic, Commerce; and many cousins and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 1, from the chapel of Evans Funeral
al Home. A private burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service.
