GASTONIA, N.C. – Mae “Mama Jones” Massey Jones, 96, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at the Robin Johnson House in Dallas.
She was born December 24, 1919, in Banks County, Ga., the daughter of the late George D. Massey and Iona Peyton Massey. Mae was the oldest living member of Temple Baptist Church in Gastonia. She retired from Firestone Mills after 35 years of service. She was the connecting factor involving the real estate and development of the revitalization of the Loray Mills.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara Foy (Charles), and Melva Broyles (Dale); son, Keith Jones; grandchildren, Donna F. Stewart Smith (Lee Smith III), Jane F. Pearson (Darrell), Hal, Dan, Ros (Holly) Gause, Sidney, Kevin Berryman (Jackie), Dawn J. Hall (Terry) and Keith Jones, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Wes, Cameron, Erika, David Stewart (Rebecca), April Lynn (Bert) Davis, Clayton and Rachel Gause, Scott Jones, Dawson Gause, Caleb, Chad Berryman (Leah), Corbin, Keaton, Wesley Berryman (Elizabeth), Anthony (Jessica), Nathan, Matthew, Martin, Ryan Jones, Victoria Hullette, Derrick Evans, Trevor Walker; great-great-grandchildren, Abraham, Titus, Maelynn Davis, Cannon, Emery Hullette, Brianna Berryman, Molly Martin and Emily Dunn; sisters, Flois Duckett, Betty Meeks (Fred), and Vernell Hix (Jimmy).
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Jones; daughter, Linda Gause; grandsons, James Berryman, Stephen and Phillip Gause, Charles Foy Jr.; granddaughter, Wendy Evans; great-grandson, Brandon Berryman; brothers, Hubert, Howard, Eugene and Edward Massey; and sisters, Mamie White, Myrtle Crenshaw, Reba Turner, and Esther Greene.
A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 16, at Temple Baptist Church, 701 Littlejohn Street, Gastonia, officiated by Pastors Greg Ballard and Scott Whitener. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, January 15, at Greene Funeral Service – South Chapel – 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia.
Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park.
