COMER – On May 29, 2014, four days before her 88 birthday, Ruby Jeannette Wilmot went home to Glory.
Ms. Wilmot was born in Athens, on June 2, 1926, the daughter of the late Lewis Bates and Gussie Lee Maxwell. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, H.D. Maxwell; niece, Sandra Lahullier; and brother-in-law, Paul Lahullier. She attended Childs Street Elementary School and Athens High School. Ms. Wilmot worked at the Palace Theatre while in high school and was a USO Girl during WWII where she won several Jitterbug competitions. She worked for Southern Bell from the mid 1950′s through the early 1970′s and took time off to raise a family before returning to work. Ms. Wilmot was the secretary at Ivy Coile Motors Body Shop until the late 1980′s when she took a job with her cousin, Danny Hopkins, at Athens Exterminating where she worked until she retired. Ms. Wilmot joined Friendship Christian Church in 1975 and was an active member until April 20, 2013, when an illness prevented her from attending. She loved her church and she loved her Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include a sister, Myrtle Lahullier; sons, Mark Wilmot and Grady Wilmot and his wife, Martha Terry Wilmot; grandson, Jake Wilmot and his wife Jennifer Smith Wilmot; granddaughter, Olivia Wilmot; nephew, Wayne Lahullier and his wife, Irene; and several close beloved cousins.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at Friendship Christian Church, 285 Tallassee Rd., Athens, GA 30606, with Pastor Doug Job officiating.
