John Robert “Bob” Green, 79, passed away peacefully of natural causes Sunday, October 26, 2014, in Atlanta.
Bob was born February 20, 1935, in Winder, the son of the late John Edward Green and Gertrude Green. Mr. Green was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy ‘Dot” Kilgore and Louise Travis; as well as a son, Jay Green.
Bob Played high school football and went on to attend Berry College in North Georgia. He enlisted in the United States Air force in 1958 and served with the 804th Transportation Squadron. Bob was honorably discharged in 1962. While serving, he met his former wife, and lifelong friend, Eleanor Jones. They were married and had daughter Stacy in 1971. Bob worked for the Small Business Administration from 1977-1985. He received numerous accolades and awards for his property management skills. In 1985 Bob started work with the Federal Depositors Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as an investigator and property management specialist and managed multimillion-dollar organizations and helped turn around failing lending institutions. Once again Bob was recognized for his exemplary work ethic receiving numerous awards for his service and performance. Bob retired from the FDIC in 1997.
He was an avid golfer, who never missed an event that was broadcast. Bob also loved to watch horseracing. If he couldn’t be at the track in person, he made sure to never miss a race on television. One of Bob’s favorite pastimes was watching his beloved University of Georgia Bulldogs in action and always had great insight and thought whenever his Dawgs had to “Hunker Down”. Bob was a 3rd degree Mason as well as a lifelong Shriner. Bobs quick wit, and sarcastic tone was his trademark.
Bob was also a very kind and generous man who dearly loved his family. Bob beamed with pride whenever his grandson, Owen, recapped his little league baseball game.
Survivors include a daughter, Stacy Lynn Slocum; son-in-law, David Slocum; grandson, Owen Levi Slocum; former wife, Elle Green; stepson Mark Green; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 1, at 11 a.m., at Barrow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday.
