JEFFERSON – Mildred Brown Gathright, 77, entered into rest Thursday, March 27, 2014.

Mrs. Gathright was born in Jefferson, the daughter of the late Foster and Jessie Mae Hardman Brown and was retired from Wayne Farms with over 30 years of service. She was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Gathright was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Gathright Jr.; sisters, Addie Bell Jackson, Virginia Daniels, Willie Mae Rucker, and Mittie Ree Brown; and a brother, John Brown.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Gathright, Jefferson; nephew, Tim Norwood, Hoschton.; sisters, Florine Griffeth, Jefferson, and Bessie T. McIntosh, Gainesville; brother, James Franklin Brown, Gainesville; goddaughter, Daphne Watson, Jefferson; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and close friend, Mary Hunter, Jefferson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, from the Jones Chapel Baptist Church with the Revs. Bobby Patman and Theodore Braswell officiating with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday March 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the body will lie in state in the church from 1 to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jones Chapel Baptist Church.

ATHENS – Duel Hosie Maddox, 87, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late John and Ossie Crawford Maddox and the widower of Doris Nabers Maddox. He was retired from Normaltown Barbershop after 53 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army, 88th Infantry, with service during World War II. Mr. Maddox was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include two children, Jeffrey W. Maddox (Linda Gale) and Jan Maddox Kirby (Chip); four grandchildren, John T. “Bo” Maddox (Nikki), Mamie Maddox Bettis (Robert), Taylor Kirby, and Trey Kirby; and two great-grandchildren, Laiken Bettis and Rivyn Bettis.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, WEST, with the Revs. Bill Ricketts and Benson Bottoms officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time.

WATKINSVILLE – Vivian Burkhalter Drake, 79, wife of 20 years to David H. Drake, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014.

A native of Athens, she was the daughter of the late Harrison Bradberry and Susie Rosetta Huff Bradberry. During her career Vivian worked for Citizens Pharmacy, Eli Whit, Athens Federal Savings and Loan, and Benson Bakery. She was a member of Briarwood Baptist Church. Mrs. Drake was preceded in death by her first husband, James Franklin Burkhalter; and brothers and sisters, Bobby Bradberry, Curtis Bradberry, Talmadge Bradberry, Anthony Bradberry, Betty Jean Bradberry, and Hilda Bradberry Savage.

Survivors in addition to her husband include children, Patricia Burkhalter (Willie) Howell, Dianne Burkhalter, David (Felicia) Drake, Deborah (Charles) Elsey, and Tim (Debbie) Drake; grandchildren, Mindee Carol (Kirk) Dunagan and their children, Chase and Clay Dunagan, Christy (Darren) Jones and their son Noah Jones, Robert Mathew (Melissa) Fulcher, Yovanda Davis, Tony Drake, Danny Kincaid, Jr., Christy Pulliam, Tim Drake, Jr., and Nathan Drake; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, at 1 p.m. at Briarwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Fuller Officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Tim Drake, Jr., Tony Drake, Mark Pulliam, Jr., Darren Jones, Robert Mathew Fulcher, and Kirk Dunagan. The family will receive friend from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at the funeral home.

Ms. Shirley was a native of Jackson County. She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Florence Boswell. She was married for the past 50 years to Royce E. Lord. She was preceded in death by brothers, Jerry and Rickey Boswell; a son, Neil Lord; and daughter, Connie Lynn Lord.

Survivors include her husband, Royce; a daughter, Diane Lord (O’Kelley); five grandchildren, Emilee Lord Patrick, Erik Neil Lord, Elisa Lord Gragg, Dacey Diane O’Kelley, and Madison Danielle O’Kelley; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ivie Funeral Home in Danielsville. Funeral services will be Sunday, March 30. at 2 p.m. at the Comer Baptist Church with interment following at Meadow Baptist Church Cemetery.

WINDER – James Perkins, 80, died Sunday, March 23, 2014.

A native and lifelong resident of Barrow County, he was the son of the late Ralph and Edna Henry Perkins, and was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Perkins. Mr. Perkins was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Statham and was a retired truck driver with Davis Transfer.

Survivors include his wife, Eudene Rowden Perkins, Winder; son, Jason (Sonya) Perkins, Monroe; grandchildren, Jake Perkins and Chloe Perkins; and sisters, Rachel Austin and Mary Ann Hayes, both of Winder.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Dr. Ronnie Healan officiating. Interment will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, March 25, from 5 to 8 p.m.

COMMERCE – Edith Anne McClure, 80, died Sunday, March 23, 2014, peacefully at her residence surrounded by family.

Ms. McClure was born in Longwood, N.C., the daughter of the late William Hemingway and Suzannah Robinson Bennett. She was retired from Dick Lynott Inc. Anne loved nature, animals, sports, gardening, her grandchildren, and family.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and David Seay, Lawrenceville, Susan and Eddie Oliver, Commerce, and Gigi and Tony Murphy, Homer; sister, Mary Lou (Lucy) Mizzles, Tyler, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Remion was born in Savannah, the son of the late Louis Francis Remion Sr. and Addie Bostick Remion. He was retired from the CSX Railroad with 43 years of service. He was a member of the Apple Valley Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. Mr. Remion was preceded in death by a son, Gary Remion; and grandson, Danny Remion.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Shirley Remion, Commerce; sons, Steve Remion, Bogart, and Frankie Mason, Watkinsville; grandson, David Remion; and one great-grandson, Daniel Jacob Remion.

Larry loved his family and his church. He was a member and was an active Deacon of Northeast Church and was a member of the Men’s Bible Study class. He loved NASCAR Racing. Mr. Rouse was preceded in death by a son, Troy Lee Rouse; and his first wife, Betty Clark Rouse.

Survivors include his wife, Judy E. Rouse; son, Matthew W. Rouse and wife Joanna, Braselton; daughters, Tabatha Rouse Frazier and husband Jonathan, Braselton, Mindy Allen and husband Keith, Braselton, and Tiffany Jones and husband Brad, Jefferson; sister Tabitha Evans, Hoschton; grandchildren, Andy Rouse and wife Melissa, Joshua Burgess, David Frazier, Brady Rouse, Amber Rouse, Brooke Rouse, Kody Love, Lucas Allen, Brooks Allen, Chris Jones, and Nick Jones; and special friends, John and Linda Hartman and Jerry and Martha Garmon.

HULL – Brenda Ann Callaway, 49, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014.

She was the daughter of the late Linton Ridgeway Callaway and Catherine Bradley Callaway. Brenda was a devout Christian and had attended Fine Finish in Danielsville until 2009.

Brenda spent most of her life in a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy, but she never asked why or felt sorry for herself. The disease finally took everything she had.

“Your family did everything that we could to keep you with us, but we finally realized that was not right, that Mama needed you more. March 19 was a special day for us as it was the day of Mama’s passing seven years ago. We felt in our hearts that she spoke to you that it was time to come home with her. You left this world with dignity and grace. Forever in our hearts you will be missed. Your hurting is over. Go walk and run in heaven.”

Survivors include sisters, Pam (Ronnie) Williams and Barbara (Ricky) Busbin; nieces, Dawn (Scott) Jarrett and Candace (Casey) Crane; nephew, Brandon Busbin and his fiancé, Leah Shiver; and several grand-nieces, grand-nephews, extended family and friends.

A funeral service was held Sunday, March 23, at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Kenny Ball officiating. Burial was at the Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Bird, Jimmy Bird, Casey Crane, Brandon Busbin, Scott Jarrett, and Randy Gabriel. Honorary pallbearer was Noah Crane.

LULA – Earl Armour, 65, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at his residence.

Born on May 30, 1948, in Hall County, he was the son of the late Jiles Armour and Bonnie Brown Armour. Mr. Armour attended Bethesda Fellowship Congregational Holiness Church and was a retired transfer officer with Lee Arrendale State Prison. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, auctions, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Armour was preceded in death by a sister, Omazell Parson; and brothers, Luther, Larry, Glen, Ricky, and Troy Armour.

Survivors include his wife, Lynda Jamerson Armour, Lula; daughter and son-in-law, Andria and Sinclair Smith, Newborn; grandchildren, Haley, Landon, and Mackenzie; brothers, N.C. Armour, Gainesville, Cecil Armour, Homer, and Jimmy Armour, Alto; and sisters, Ruby Simmons, Alto, and Janice Armour, Cornelia.

CANON – Betty Ann Pruitt Childs, 84, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Childs was born in Canon on July 1, 1929, the daughter of the late Boyd Henry (Bus) Pruitt and Jewel McGarity Pruitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Douglas (Doug) Childs; and a sister, Bonnie Jean Floyd. Mrs. Childs was a member of the Redwine United Methodist Church, but attended Old Canon Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. and Sharon Childs, Starr, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Martha C. and Edwin Miller, Comer; grandchildren, Cappy Cross, Chadwic Childs, Camee Hobbs, Melondy Khan, Stacey Miller, and Matthew Miller; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Alice Ayers, Snellville.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Mike Sarna and James Sexton officiating. Burial was in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park in Hartwell.
