Charles Edward McCollum passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. McCollum was preceded in death by his wife, Sara E. McCollum; a son, David McCollum; daughter, Charlene Roberts; and a great-grandchild.

He was retired from Roper Pump Company and served in the United States Army. Mr. McCollum is survived by a daughter, Julie McCollum, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Barbara McCollum, Toccoa; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and special friends, Ruby Lynn Minish, Commerce, and Chris Hill, Commerce.

Graveside services were held Monday March 31, at Jackson Memorial Park.

JEFFERSON – Nina Jonette Castleberry “Jo” Wilkes, 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

Born in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late John Kalper Castleberry and Nettie Turner Conkle Castleberry. She was retired from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, where she was a administrative assistant, and was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church. Her hobbies include working on genealogy and hybrid roses. Mrs. Wilkes was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Claude Glenn Wilkes; two children, Kenneth Wilkes and Michelle Wilkes; and two sisters, Ellen Warwick and Josephine Castleberry.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Wilkes Hale, Nicholson; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Susan Wilkes, Londonderry, N.H.; two grandchildren, Claudia Hale-Jinks, Ocala, Fla., and Collis Hale, Tampa, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Charley Jinks and John Jinks, both of Ocala, Fla.; and sister, Betty Massey, Ellijay.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Ray officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Friday, April 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ruby Dailey (04-14-14)

Ruby Irene Seagraves Dailey, 96, passed away at her residence surrounded by her family on Monday, April 14, 2014, following a brief illness.

Ruby lived in Jackson County all her life until 12 years ago when she moved to Gray, Ga., to be near family. She was the daughter of the late Birdie and Mary Seagraves of Jackson County. She was a homemaker and retired textile business worker. Ruby was the oldest member of Nicholson Baptist Church. She retired from Commerce Manufacturing Company and after that she and her husband did some traveling, but mostly spent her time enjoying her family and piecing quilt tops. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren each have at least one quilt made especially for them.

Ruby enjoyed sports. She was a big Georgia Bulldog fan and attended Georgia football games until the end. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren and in later years her great-grandchildren participate in all their activities. Family was very important to her.

Ruby was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Thomas E. Dailey. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Nellie Tolbert, Mamie Smith and Tellie Mae Kesler and three brothers, Hoyt Seagraves, Jewel Seagraves and Amory Seagraves.

Ruby is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Wesley Wells, Gray, and Martha Lynn and J.D. Comstock, Gainesville, Fla.; three grandsons, Tommy (Amy) Wells, Athens, Ken (Greer) Wells, Watkinsville, Jared (Stephanie) Comstock, Gainesville, Fla.; and one granddaughter, Paige Comstock, Boston, Mass.; nine great-grandchildren who were the loves of her life, Wesley, Luke, Tanner, and Zach Wells, Karlee, Kendall, Kourtney, and Kamryn Wells, and Calvin Comstock; one surviving sibling, Allie Farmer, Nicholson.
She was affectionately known as Mother, Granga, Nanga, and Na-Na by her loving family, who cherish the happy memories of her. She left us with quite a legacy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 18, at Nicholson Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Collins and Terry Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Jackson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, April 17, from 5 to 8 p.m.

JEFFERSON – Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Hardy Wilbanks, 83, entered into rest Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

Mrs. Wilbanks was born in Winder, the daughter of the late Hoyt and Thelma Sims Hardy. Mrs. Wilbanks was a graduate of Athens Technical College, a retired Licensed Practical Nurse, and an employee of the Jackson Herald Newspaper for many years. Mrs. Wilbanks was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, and together with her late husband Tom, enjoyed maintaining the grounds around the church. Mrs. Wilbanks was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Charles Wilbanks; grandson, Kory Potts; brother, Hoyt Hardy Jr.; and sister, Louise White.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Damon and Janice Wilbanks, Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Kelli and Jeff Potts, Jefferson; grandchildren, Shawn and Casey McNally, Tyler and Carla Truelove, Kyle and Chelsey Potts; great-grandchildren, Kade McNally, Graciebeth and Ty Trulove, and Katypaige Potts; sisters, Bobbie Skinner, Jane Phillips, Myra Brock; and a brother, Jerry.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 18, at 4 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Jefferson with Dr. Michael Helms officiating along with family members. The burial will follow in the Woodbine Cemetery with Fred Glass, Fred Gurley, Larry Hardy, Phil Thurmond, Buddy Long, Mitch Brock, and Jimmy Gooch honored as pallbearers. The visitation will be held on Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Jefferson prior to the service.

MCDONOUGH – Janie Lucy Souther, 95, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Johnson and Martha Jane Bledsoe English. Mrs. Souther was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Chambliss Souther.

NICHOLSON – Rome Jefferson Manus, III, 66 died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Georgia Regents Hospital.

Mr. Manus was born in Commerce, the son of the late Rome Jefferson Manus, Jr. and Dorothy Cordelia Edwards Manus. He was a retired painter. Mr. Manus was preceded in death by brothers, Ronald Manus and Dean Stephens.

Survivors include children, Scott Manus, Carnesville, Daran Manus, Oakwood, Angela Manus, Cornelia, and Jennifer Wade, Baldwin; brother, Lamar Manus, Augusta; and sisters, Theresia Newman, Brooklet, and Martha Ann Baker, Maysville.

Mr. Vaughn was born in Commerce, the son of the late Chalmas and Agnes Smith Vaughn. He was retired as a carpenter.

WINDER – Nora Mote Deaton, 85, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

A native of Barrow County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Pearl Loggins Mote. Mrs. Deaton was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Deaton. She was a retiree of Cherokee Manufacturing Company and was a member of Bethabra Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Joyce (David) Binnion; brothers, Herman (Ann) Mote and Quinton (Martha) Mote, all of Winder, and Danny (Brenda) Mote, Dacula; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Holliday Corine Deaton and Peggy Deaton, all of Winder; brothers-in-law, Bill Deaton, Snellville, James Deaton, Gainesville, and Verlyn Deaton, Monroe; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hall was born in Jefferson, the daughter of the late Louis and Annie Perry Pritchett. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hall; two sons, Michael and David Hall; and grandson, Scott Nix.

Survivors include a son, Brian Hall, Jefferson; three grandchildren, Kevin Hall, Melissa Hall, and William Hall; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was born in Jefferson, the daughter of the late Claude B. and Novie Turpin Davis. Mrs. Smith was a member of Faith Baptist Church, and retired from the textile industry and the restaurant business. Hazel was a loving and caring mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Davis and Ed Davis; and two sisters, Dot Pittman and Eva Edwards.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Smith and Tommy and Debbie Smith, all of Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Vince Patten, Cumming; sisters, Roberta Wood and Claudia Chastain, both of Jefferson; brother, John Davis, Danielsville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

COMMERCE – Christopher “Chris” Damon Garrett, 35, entered into rest Friday, April 11, 2014.

He was born in Commerce, the son of Ricky and Gloria Dudley Garrett of Commerce. Mr. Garrett was an avid race fan and was a successful owner, racecar builder and driver of his own car. Chris’ # 49 was a regular on many dirt tracks and in many races in the area. Chris was an accomplished farmer and diesel technician and worked side by side with his father in the family business.

Survivors in addition to his parents, include a son, Ricky Damon Garrett, Commerce; daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Garrett, Commerce; grandmother, Louise Dudley, Commerce; special friend, Lisa Akins, Commerce; and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday April 14, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Patsy Garrett officiating. Interment was on the Garrett Farm on Apple Valley Road, Commerce. Robert Dudley, Trebor Dudley, Darrell Garrett, Larry Garrett, Daniel Anderson, and Eric Shummer were honored as pallbearers.

ATHENS – Patricia “Pat” Armour, 75, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014.

A native of Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude Blickhahn Reilly and was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Reilly. She owned and operated Armour Catering for over 25 years. Mrs. Armour also enjoyed farming and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 60 years.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Randolph Raymond “Randy” Armour, Athens; sons, Bob Armour (Debbie), Hull, Rick Armour (Jennifer), La Jolla, Calif., and Gary Armour and fiancé, Sherri Kirbo, Athens; daughters, Kathy Wheeler (Angelo), Hull, and Beverly Drake, Weatherford, Texas; brothers, Mike Reilly (Mary Ann), Hull, and Steve Reilly (Sandy), Seneca, S.C.; sisters, Kathy Smith (Chuck), Athens, Barbara Cumming (Jim), Madison, Becky Mathis (Neal), Hull, and Diane Smith (Curtis), Greensboro; and grandchildren, Ashley Armour, Josh Drake (Dana), Hannah Armour, Michael Drake, and Ian Armour.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 14, in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Father Gaurav Shroff and the Rev. Hugh Minor officiating. Interment was at Oconee Hill Cemetery.

COMMERCE – John Eugene Purcell, 53, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Purcell was born in Gainesville, the son of the late Gene and Elizabeth Logan Purcell. He was employed at Roper Pump as an engineer.

Hel is survived by a son, Gordon Purcell; daughter, Emma Purcell, both of Commerce; and brother, Jim Purcel, Watkinsville.

A celebration of life will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home. During John’s service, the family welcomes any of his family, friends, and classmates to share their favorite “John stories”.

DANIELSVILLE – Sarah Louise Patrick, 81, devoted wife and mother, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 17, 2014.

Born in Screven County, Mrs. Patrick was preceded in death by her parents, H. W. and Arrie Anderson Lewis; and son, Leonard Patrick. She was a devout Christian and prayer warrior and attended Riverside Baptist Church as long as her health would allow.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Richard A. Patrick; three children, Iris (Bobby) Newbury, Mike (Brenda) Patrick, and Lisa (Alan) Carver, all of Danielsville; two sisters, Laverne McCormick of Dallas and Shirley Currie of Lexington, SC; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Monday, April 21, at 4 p.m., at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, Danielsville.

JEFFERSON – Donnie Ray Taylor, 58, of Jefferson, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

Mr. Taylor was born in Atlanta, the son of the late Albert Taylor and Catherine Station Taylor of Winder. He was a plumber by trade, in which he was self-employed. Mr. Taylor was the general contractor during the construction of the new Peoples Baptist Church in Jefferson, a task he thoroughly enjoyed.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of more than 30 years, Elaine Taylor, Jefferson; daughters, Mandy (Jeff) Grooms, Nicholson, and Brandy Thomas, Jefferson; son, John Taylor, Jefferson; sisters, Cindy McKeeham and Kathy Wilson, both of Winder; brothers, Christopher Taylor and Steve Taylor, both of Winder; grandchildren, Katelyn Taylor, Ashleigh Grooms, Austin William Thomas, Faith Danielle Grooms, Fredrick Johnathan Taylor Jr., Logan Ray Thomas, Jacob Alan Taylor, and Kaleigh Lyn Taylor; and a number of other relatives.

A celebration of life service will be held Friday April 25, at 2:00 p.m., at Peoples Baptist Church in Jefferson with Brother John Briscoe and Pastor Albert Whitlock officiating. The family will receive friends starting at 1:30 p.m. and then after the service at the church.

Born in Jefferson, he was the son of the late Ralph and Rosa Lou Highfill Garrison. He was a lifelong member of Oconee Baptist Church, a member of I.B.E.W., Tumbling Waters Society, retired from Westinghouse/ABB after 32 years, and was a United States Navy Veteran of the Korean War. PeeWee, as he was affectionately known by friends and family, was the Miller at the Hurricane Shoals Grist Mill for many years, where he would grind cornmeal for the many anxious customers during the annual Art in the Park festival. PeeWee was a master musician of many instruments, the fiddle being his first instrument. Music was a vital part of the Garrison family’s way of life and PeeWee passed on his love of music to his family, who now carry on the tradition. Pee Wee was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michella Rhea Garrison; and three brothers, James Lloyd Garrison, Paul Quillian Garrison, and Johnny Horace Garrison.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Waters Garrison, Maysville; daughter, Debbie Smith and her husband Ronnie, Jefferson; daughter, Tammy Sauls and her husband Larry, Winder; sons, Mark Garrison and his wife Donna, Maysville, David Garrison and his wife Jodi, Maysville, and Adam Garrison and his wife Francy, Maysville; sister-in-law, Nancy Waters Harrison, Clermont; grandchildren, Nick and Amanda Smith, Laura and Augusto Bairos, Jeremy and Jennifer Smith, Dylan and Glenna Kilgore, Amber and Ryan Hollis, Matthew and Liz Garrison, Hannah Garrison, Seth Garrison, Jessica Garrison, Kaleb Garrison, Kasey Garrison, Heather and Keith Standard, and Summer Payne; great-grandchildren, Kane, Koby, Camille, Bella, Owen, Barrett, Alston, Ashlyn, Spence, and Sutton; and several nieces and nephews.

A musical celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Evans Funeral Home Chapel, where family and friends will gather in honor of PeeWee. The family will receive friends during the celebration.
Flowers are to be omitted with memorials made to the Tumbling Waters Society, P.O. Box 164, Jefferson, GA 30549.
