Ada Woods Auten Wheeler was born in Orange County, N.C., on May 14, 1923, and passed away in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday, May 23, 2015.
She attended school in Hillsborough, N.C., and at age 18 moved to Charlotte, N.C., to work. She married Stewart Martin Auten, a Charlotte native, in 1941, and had five children who survive her. They are Stewart Martin Auten, Jr. (Glenna), Fairview, N.C., Linda Auten Blair (Brian), Louisa, Va., Ruby Auten Davis (Ken), New Bern, N.C., Tonda Auten Carter (Keith), Greenville, S.C., and Sandy Charles Auten (Lorie), Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
Ada lost her husband, Martin Auten, when he passed away in 1968. In 1972 she married Clifford Allen Wheeler of Commerce, and moved there. She is survived by Clifford’s two children, Jimmy Wheeler (Mary), Lawrenceville, and Louise Wheeler Woodhall (Colman “Bo”), Johnson City, Tenn. Clifford passed away in 1999, and Ada then moved to Greenville, S.C. to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Tonda and Keith Carter.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Jarod Doster (Tanya), Kevin Blair (Barbara), Kenneth Blair (Lisa), Briana Blair Locke (David), Sally Davis Annabel (Thomas), Stewart Davis (Cindy), Esme Auten Carter (Curtis), Libby Carter Ball (Kevin), and Bailey Auten. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren.
Ada was the next to youngest of ten children, and is survived by three of them, Frances Woods Coleman (Alonzo, deceased), John Woods (Margie), and Fred Woods (Florence).
She was a devoutly spiritual person and lived her life with loving Christian values.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 30, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., at Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Dr., Greenville, S.C. The funeral will be Sunday, May 31, at 2 p.m., McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, N.C. The casket will be open from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The family will greet family and friends after the service.
