STAUNTON, VA – Betty Jean (Hayes) Berry, 74, widow of Lawrence Elwood Berry, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born June 12, 1938 in Lexington, Va., the daughter of the late James Henry Hayes, Sr. and Mary Belle (Toman) Hayes.
Mrs. Berry retired from the Jackson County School System in Georgia, where she had worked as a custodian. She was of the Baptist denomination, was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #1439 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Fraternal Order of Aerie # 680. She enjoyed country music, dancing and motorcycle noise. Betty loved her family and her extended family of friends and their wonderful fun times together. Mrs. Berry was preceded in death by a brother, James Henry “Jimmy” Hayes, Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Clyde L. Berry, Harrisonburg, Va., Jason M. Berry, Talmo, and Wesley S. Berry, Greenville, Va.; a daughter, Tina Dawn Quarles, Gainesville; sister, Nancy H. Whitesell and her husband “Tommy”, Staunton, Va.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, Mamie Powell, Kitty Lindsay, Faye Hayes and Cheryl Spradlin.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 18, at Oaklawn Memory Gardens by Pastor Steven L. Lawhorne. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 17, in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
