JEFFERSON – Ruth Evans Carter, 93, died Monday, September 15, 2014, at her residence in Jefferson surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation will be held at Evans Funeral Home, Wednesday, September 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 18, at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Shelton officiating. Interment will be at Evans Memory Gardens.

Ruth was born in the Dry Pond community outside of Jefferson to parents, Alvin Edgar and Eunice Boggs Evans. Ruth was baptized at Oconee Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Martin Institute Class of 1938.
Upon completing a business course, Ruth was proud to be one of first employees of Jackson Electric Company, formerly known as the “REA”, hired as a billing clerk. When electricity was connected in Jackson County, she stated, “That’s the most wonderful thing that ever happened to the country people.” Mrs. Carter was a volunteer at Crawford W. Long Museum, Jefferson City Schools, local area hospitals, and delivered “Meals on Wheels”. She and her husband were active members of the Jackson County Senior Citizens Center.

Mrs. Ruth E. Carter will be featured in an upcoming historical account of WWII in a PBS Documentary to be aired in 2015. First husband, Damon “Rocky” Gause, a son Damon Lance Gause, and sisters, Therese Legg and Grace Freeman, preceded Mrs. Carter in death.

Survivors are Vernon Carter (married 67 years); daughters, Janis Wilsterman, Decatur, and Susan Carter, Athens; son, Cary Carter and wife, Melissa, Jefferson; seven grandchildren, Ginger, Lance, Kira, Luke, Kayrn, Jason, and Kyle; along with seven great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Voyles; and nieces, and nephews.
