Elmer Simmons (10-11-14)

COMER – Elmer O. Simmons, 93, died Saturday, October 11, 2014.

He was the son of the late Frank and Lexie Bond Simmons and served in the United States Army during World War II. He landed at Normandy, was a part of the Battle of the Bulge, and served in France, Belgium and Germany. He returned home on December 25, 1945. Elmer went on to become a poultry inspector with the United States Department of Agriculture and was a member of Moons Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by sisters, Cecile Minish and Gladys Seagraves; and brothers, Frazier, Willard, and Francis Simmons.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Robena Murray Simmons; children, Janice Simmons Burke (Jeff), Jerry E. Simmons (Carol), Mick Simmons (Cathy), Don Simmons, and David Simmons (Jill); sisters Ruby Wood and Fannie Wood; grandchildren, Jennifer Rorex, Cindy O’Barr, Christine Smith and Grace Simmons; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, October 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 14, at 11 a.m., at Lord and Stephens Danielsville chapel with the Revs. Tom Dial and Tony Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Danielsville Memorial Gardens.
