COMMERCE – Larry Milton Ayers, 58, passed away Monday, February 1, 2016.

Mr. Ayers was the son of the late Herman and Lois Turpin Ayers. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Turner; and mother-in-law, Gertrude Haynes. He was employed by Certainties.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Alexander Ayers, Commerce; daughter, Yvette Crumley, Danielsville; son, Tommy Ayers, Winder; seven brothers, Leroy (Ann) Ayers, Baldwin, Luther (Linda) Ayers, Homer, Marvin (Lois) Ayers, Homer, Lamar (Lynn) Ayers, Homer, Harold Ayers, Ila, Ralph (Penny) Ayers, Carnesville, and David (Charlene) Ayers, Commerce; three sisters, Betty Grizzle, Commerce, Evelyn (Paul) Blalock, Danielsville, and Lucy (Waymon) Shore, Commerce; seven grandchildren, Edward, Dalton, Levi, all of Danielsville, Erica, Rebekah, Emily Turner, all of Jefferson, Abigail Ayers, Winder; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 4, at Ivie Funeral Home Chapel in Commerce with the Rev. Bo Whistnant and Levi Crumley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, at the funeral home.

WINDER – David Adams Binnion, 75, passed away Monday, February 1, 2016, at his residence.

A native of Texas, he was the son of the late Hank and Irma Adams Binnion. Mr. Binnion had lived in Barrow County since 2000, and was a former resident of Monroe, Ga., and Wichita Falls, Texas. He was an engineer with Duck Head Apparel. Mr. Binnion had attended Calvary Baptist Church at Carl.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Mote Binnion, Winder; daughters, Dana Binnion and Laura Binnion, both of Denton, Texas; grandchildren, Marlow Abrams, Lenexa, Kan., and Aaron Binnion, Benton, Texas; brother, Barry Binnion; and sister, Sue Bork, both of Wichita Falls, Texas.

The family will receive friends Friday, February 5, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 6, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with Dr. Brian Swafford and Mr. Doug Swafford officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Garnette Shields Smith, 83, wife of the late Bennie Mack Smith, died Tuesday, February 2, 2016.

Born in Commerce, resident of Ila, she was the daughter of the late Garney Athaniel Shields and Colia Belle Culbertson Shields and sister to the late Sylvia Williams. She had worked in the textile Industry most of her life as a seamstress and was of the Baptist denomination. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and truly loved being with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy (Marshall) Davis, Madison, Ga.; son, Johnny Mac (Donna Hanley) Smith, Ila; sister, Cumi Walker, Ila; brother, Junior (Maxine) Shields, Ila; grandchildren, Mitchell Davis and Clay (Ann) Davis; great grandchildren, Mason Davis and Danner Davis; several nieces and nephews; and her caretakers, Donna Hanley, Sarah McCullough and Elaine Williams.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 4, at 2 p.m., at Lord & Stephens Danielsville Chapel with the Revs. Jeff Hicks and Kenneth Taylor. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel. Pallbearers will be Tim Shields, Mike Fitzpatrick, Bradley Hanley, Justin Hanley, Brandon Hanley and Kyle Lackey. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, at the funeral home.

Mary Anglin Chandler Wade, age 84, died Saturday, January 30, 2016, at her sister Alice’s home, where she was taking care of her during her last days.

Ms. Wade was a native of Commerce, but spent most of her life in the Atlanta metro area. She worked for Sears and Roebuck for many years as a switchboard operator. She loved her precious friends in the apartment community where she lived prior to her health declining. She loved each and every one of them dearly and would often speak of her friend, Marlene Wood and say, “Marlene is my guardian angel.” Ms. Wade also had such a wonderful friendship with Angie Hooper, which was not only her banker, but was always there for her checking on her and doing whatever Angie could for her.

Ms. Wade was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Susie Anglin; her children’s father, Malcom Chandler; sisters, Martha Kolen, Pat Holt, Sue Hill, Freda Baxter, and Nance Hill Roberts; brother, Jimmy Anglin; sons, Larry and Jerry Chandler; and daughter, Janet Howard.

Survivors include daughters, Wanda Pugh and Myra Ward (Bob); sister, Alice Whitener (Dan); a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 6, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the services.

Wanda and Myra want to say a big “Thank You” to the ladies that were always so good to their mother. Ms. Wade will be solely missed by family and friends.

JEFFERSON – Kate King Martin, 89, entered into rest Sunday, January 31, 2016.

Mrs. Martin was born in Commerce, the daughter of the late Daniel Ernest and Sally Nicholson King. She was a seamstress, a homemaker, and along with her late husband operated a successful poultry and cattle farm. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter Martin; sisters, Sarah, Trell and LuBelle King, Ella Owensby, Clara Hendrix, and Florene Buzell; and brothers, Allen and Paul King.

Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Peeler and her husband James, Roopville; son, Ernest Martin and his wife Jackie, Jefferson; son, Ben Martin, Jefferson; grandchildren, Heath Martin and his wife Misty, Patrick Peeler and his wife Tina, and Dustin Martin and his wife Arin; and great-grandchildren, Maverick and Maddie Grace Martin, Blake, Brooks and Brody Peeler, Jaiden and Josiah Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, from the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with Minister Tom Plank officiating. Burial will follow in the Lebanon Methodist Church Cemetery. Gentlemen honored as pallbearers will be Patrick Peeler, Heath Martin, Dustin Martin, Joe Sikes, Steve Wilson, and Jimmy Bray. MT. AIRY – Dereta Garrett Page, 57, went to be with the Lord Friday, January 29, 2016, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Page was born on February 11, 1958, in Franklin, N.C., the daughter of the late Duel and Irene Edwards Garrett. She was a member of Mercy Baptist Church, and had been employed with Kubota, Sugar Foods, and most recently, North Georgia Technical College. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Page was preceded in death by her brother, Otis Garrett.

Survivors include her husband, Ricky Page, Mt. Airy; son, Tyson Page, Winder; sister, Duelene Garrett Burton, Mt. Airy; brother, Wayne Garrett, Commerce; and grandchild, Levi Page.

Memorial services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, February 6, at Mercy Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Helton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour on that day.

JEFFERSON – Perry Lynn Burgess, 56, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 2, 2016.

He was the son of the late Catherine and Jimmy Stowe and was proceeded in death by a son, Jeremiah Dills.

Perry was called to preach in 1992. Perry and his wife, Angie, began a full time ministry in 1998. He preached in churches, jails, prisons and drug rehabilitation centers, preached in Elsavador in the prisons, and ministered in the orphanages He and his wife had a homeless ministry, Walk on Water, in Athens, for ten years. He also ministered to those at the Potter’s House for 12 years. Perry began serving as a pastor in 2004. He was currently serving as the Pastor of Walk on Water Church in Jefferson. He served as chaplain for the Commerce City Police Department for two years.

Survivors include his wife, Angie Burgess; sons, Jesse and Josiah; and three grandchildren, Reece, Tripp, and Cole.

Memorial services were held Saturday, February 6, at Lighthouse World Outreach Center in Monroe. Pastor Raymond and Cindy Hardy and Dr. Robert O’Neal officiated.

CRAWFORD, GA – Reverend Robert E. H. ‘Bob’ Wagnon, 79, took hold of Jesus’ hand and stepped into eternity on Monday, February 8, 2016.

Born in Greene County Ga. on August 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Edwin Harold and Mildred Lundy Wagnon, and a retired minister and funeral director. Rev. Wagnon truly loved the Lord and good gospel singing. Over the course of his ministry, he pastored several churches throughout the state of Georgia.

For over 50 years he worked in the funeral business, passionately serving families at their greatest time of loss. In 1975 Mr. Wagnon moved his family to Oglethorpe County, where he founded Oglethorpe Chapel Funeral Home. His compassion for people and his exceptional work ethic made him the “best of the best,” a funeral director’s funeral director.

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and friend, he was a member of Collier Baptist Church, where he loved everyone.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Collins Wagnon; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Paula Wagnon; granddaughter, Rachael (Cameron) Priest; grandson, Nathan (Crystal) Wagnon; six grandchildren, Madeline, Amelia, Evelyn, and Sophia Priest and Christopher and Cody Wagnon; step-children, Connie (Wallace) Carter, Amanda Collins, Dixon (Elisa) Collins, and Jason (Melissa) Collins; seven step-grandchildren, Helen and Leon Carter, Allen and Jennifer Reynolds, Jordon and Lindsey Collins, and Cole Collins; and one great-granddaughter, Lexie Reynolds.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11, at 2 p.m. at Collier Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Bunch officiating. Interment will be at Siloam Cemetery in Siloam, Ga. She was born in Elbert County on June 24, 1931, the daughter of the late Floy and George Will McClain Benton. She was a member of New Town Baptist Church and retired from Bell Sewing Plant. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. Cooper; a son, Bruce Cooper; and brothers, J.M. Charles, Emory, Billy Joe, and G.W.

Survivors include a daughter Dianne C. Mauldin, Lavonia; daughter-in-law, Denise Porterfield Cooper, Carlton; sister, Betty Guest, Carlton; sisters-in-law Martha Benton, Carlton, and Margaret Bullard and her husband Carlton, Jefferson; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 8, at 2 p.m., in New Town Baptist Church with the Rev. John Guest officiating. JEFFERSON – Peggy Sue Chasteen Stephens, 74 passed away Monday, February 15, 2016, in Athens.

Peggy was born in Anderson, S.C. on May 30, 1941. She was the daughter of the late William Thomas Chasteen and Ruth King Chasteen. She lived most of her life in the Atlanta area, but had lived in Jefferson for the past 10 years. She was a 1959 Graduate of Lavonia High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jefferson and previously Calvary Baptist Church in Lilburn. She worked for several large companies including Singer, Coca-Cola and Kodak. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Risner.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Kay Stephens, Jefferson; daughters, Linda Stephens Howarth, Dahlonega, and Jennifer Lynn Stephens, Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Anthony Stephens and Christina Michelle Stephens, Fayetteville, Ga.; granddaughters, Heather Leigh Howarth, New York, N.Y., Abigail Joan Stephens, Rebekah Ann Stephens and Mary Bernadette Stephens, all of Fayetteville; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Dan Turpin, Martin, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Cheryl Chasteen, Athens, GA; brother, Doug Chasteen of Gainesville, GA ; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Debbie Chasteen of Athens; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Runnels, Shirley Smith, Sylvia Barber and Sue Ward; special friends, Bill and Lavon Venable; and a host of friends and family.

WINDER – Mr. Darrel Henry Sellers, age 83, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016. He served in the United States military in the Navy during the Korean War. He was employed by Savannah River Plant.

Mr. Sellers is preceded in death by his parents, Hershel and Eula Mae Robertson.

Mr. Sellers is survived by his wife Sue C. Sellers; a son, Jeffrey Doyle Sellers of Easley, S.C.; daughters, Karen (Kent) O’Sheilds of Martin, Tami Howell of Easley, S.C., and Amy Dunahoo Weathers of Winder; grandchildren, Mendy Weathers Church, Kim Weathers Kiesel, Nathan Todd Weathers, Gregory Scott Patterson, Jr., William Darrel and Grayson Hamilton Louern, Joshua Richard and Jeremiah Chad Hall, Jamie Rebekah Wilson, Jana Thomas Bennett, and Chelsey Catherine Howell; and 13 great-grandchildren.

WINDER – Virginia Lou “Ginny” Barron, 96, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016.

A native of Erwin, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late C. D. and Bessie Lou Woods Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Bill Barron on July 3, 1995. Mrs. Barron served in the United States Army during World War II as a nurse, and received the rank of First Lieutenant. She was a member of the Winder First United Methodist Church, The Winder Noon Lion’s Club, The Winder Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of The First Families of Tennessee.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Gary Wright and Diane and Chris Carr, all of Winder; brother, Richard Earl Morgan, Orange Park, Fla.; grandchildren, Mandy Free, Casey Wright, Will Holbrook, and Courtney Carter; and great-grandchildren, Grayson Pierce, Zach Pierce, Colby Wright, Anna Holbrook, Evan Holbrook, Madilyn Carter, and Ellis Carter.

The family will receive friends Saturday, February 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 21, at 4 p.m., from the Winder First United Methodist Church. The remains will be placed in state at 3:30 p.m. in the church. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors.

AUBURN – Clinton Chavis, 86, passed away on Saturday, April, 16, 2016.

He was native of Orangeburg, S.C. He was a steel worker and a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Chavis was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Ollie Lewis Chavis; and his wife, Kay Chavis.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Bobbie (Debbie) Chavis, Auburn, Don (Janie) Chavis, Auburn, and Max (Selena) Chavis, Niceville, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Tamie (Donny) Thomas, Townsville, S.C.; grandchildren, Robert and Lisa Chavis, Amanda Everett, Katie and Sebo May, Matthew, Chris, Taylor, Jessica and Holly Chavis; and great-grandchildren, Shelby Everett, Lilly Chavis, Kaylynn May, and Thomsen Chavis.

The family will be receiving friends on Monday, April 18, from 2 to 4 pm. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 19, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Auburn with the Rev. Sammy Everett officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

JEFFERSON – Betty Jane Fleming, 85, entered into rest Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Mrs. Fleming was born in Bastrop, La., the daughter of the late John Clark Moore and Lillian Woods Moore. She attended Louisiana Tech and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Mrs. Fleming was preceded in death by her husband, William Lawson Fleming Sr.

Survivors include a son, Bill Fleming and his wife Traci, Jefferson.; daughter, Viki Cook and her husband Dennis, Monroe, La.; daughter, Lisa Fleming, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; son, Bern Fleming and his wife Holly, Hoschton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 18, from the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with burial in Evans Memory Gardens.

COLBERT – Jack N. McClellan, 83, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016.

Born in Commerce, he was the son of the late James McClellan and Clyde Short McClellan. Mr. McClellan was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, where he served in the Korean Conflict. He spent 18 months in Guam, and assisted in the construction of the air strip at Anderson Air Force Base. Following his discharge from the Air Force, he became an electrician by trade and worked for Reliance Electric for 22 years. Mr. McClellan was preceded in death by two brothers, James McClellan and Roger McClellan; and one nephew, Ricky Burroughs.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rebecca Lamar McClellan; one daughter, Linda Carol McClellan; one sister, Sharon Burroughs; and one grand-dog, Abbagale Rose McClellan.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 27, at 1 p.m., at Lord and Stephens, West, with the Rev. Kathy Brockman officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jake Drake, Silas Kinley, Grant Simmons, Billy Seagraves, Larry Gabriel, and Keith Lunsford. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony and Ashley Drake, John and Polly Simmons, Judy and Wayne Craig, David Drake, Bill McClure, Chris Boswell, Clay Parsons, Harry Smith, Dennis Burroughs, Jack Malaier, Melvin Baskins, and Ralph Sheridan. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 26, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
