WINDER – Edward Earl Sims, 68, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016.

He was the son of Marion Edge Sims of Winder and the late Lorenzia Sims. He was a warehouse operator with Windstream with 35 years of service and was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Sims was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sims Clark; and sister, Carol Sims Burgess.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of 46 years, Michelle Sims, Winder; son, Mike (Melanie) Sims, Winder; daughter, Holly Denise Sims, Winder; sisters, Wanda Jones, Monroe, Brenda (Jimmy) Sims Ku, Marietta, Glenda (William) Sims Fleming, Winder, and Dot Sims Matthews, Winder; and one granddaughter, Ashley McCall Sims.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at the Smith Memory Chapel with the Rev. John Burchfield officiating. Interment will follow in Barrow Memorial Gardens in Winder. The family will be receiving friends on Friday evening, May 20, from 5 until 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

PENDERGRASS – Edna Mae Long Kimsey, 80, entered into rest Wednesday, May 18, 2016.

Mrs. Kimsey was born in Crawford, Ga., the daughter of the late Tom Seeley Hattie Long. She retired from Wayne Poultry and was a member of the Braselton Church of God. Mrs. Kimsey was preceded in death by her husband, William Kimsey.

Survivors include two sisters, Mae Allene Seeley, Commerce, and Alice Collier, Braselton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home with burial to follow in Pond Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, May 20, from 6 to 8 p.m.

JEFFERSON – Howard N. Broomberg, 76, formerly of Valdosta, died Sunday, May 15, 2016, at Athens Regional Hospital in Athens.

He was born in Detroit, Mich., on October 19, 1939, the son of the late Jack and Ida Vidro Broomberg. He had lived in Valdosta for many years before moving to Jefferson 30 years ago. Mr. Broomberg was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a retired contractor. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister in law, Sheldon and Estelle Broomberg of Valdosta.

Survivors include his special partner, Darlene Bradford, Jefferson; children and their spouses, Craig and Shari Broomberg, Jupiter, Fla., Stacy Broomberg, Valdosta, and Jaret and Leigh Broomberg, Lake Park; grandchildren, Cole Broomberg and Marleigh Broomberg; brother and sister-in -aw, Marvin and Debbie Broomberg, Valdosta; sister and brother-in-law, Marsha and Carl Bogo, Augusta; his former wife and the mother of his children, Carolyn Broomberg, Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Rabbi Moshe Elbaz officiating.

JEFFERSON – LC Funderburk, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016.

LC loved his family, fishing, and he was a big NASCAR car fan.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Hollis Funderburk, Jefferson; sons, Ricky Funderburk and wife Pam, Florida, and Randall Lynn Funderburk and wife Lorraine, Newborn; brothers, T.W. Funderburk and wife Shirley, Johnny Funderburk and wife Judy, and Larry Funderburk, all of Pendergrass, Gene Funderburk and wife Margaret, Clayton; sisters, Ruby Nell Franklin and husband Willard, Fannie M. Lance and husband John A., all of Pendergrass; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His nephew, Donald Nix of Pendergrass, became his constant companion and loving caretaker, he and LC were real buddies. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gene Funderburk; brothers, RL Funderburk and Jake Funderburk; sisters, Sadie Funderburk Strange and Hazel Funderburk Nix.

There will be no services held, however; the family requests that contributions can be made to the American Heart Association at heart.org.

WINDER – Ron Beacham, 79, died Sunday, May 22, 2016.

A native of North Carolina, Mr. Beacham was the son of the late Fred and Mamie Lentz Beacham. Mr. Beacham was retired from Crowley Martine and was an Air Force Korean Vet. He was a Mason and Shriner, Charter member of Amvet Post 12, and was the Chaplain. Mr. Beacham was an Elder and Member of Carter Hill Christian Church. He was an Air Force Sgt.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Beacham, Winder; children, Jeff Beacham, Winder, and Connie Ross, Winder.; step children, Greg (Beverly) Coker, Jefferson, Cori (Larry) Jones, Irmo, S.C., Georgianne (Darrin) Moore, College Station, Texas, and Carolee Coker, Carnesville; sister, Martha Klutz, Granite Quarry, N.C.; brother-in-law; Frank Giles; sister-in-law; Martha Whitehead; grandchildren, Ryan Beacham, Marianne Hensen, and Lee Holdredge; and seven step grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 25, at Carter Hill Christian Church at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The Rev. Ben Parker will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, May 24, from 5 to 8 p.m.

JEFFERSON – Nellie Faye “Little Gal” Lee, 69, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

Mrs. Lee was born in Jefferson, the daughter to the late Luther and Loubelle Satterfield Gaines. Mrs. Lee was a homemaker and of the Holiness denomination. She was preceded in death by 18 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, C. Richard Lee, Jefferson; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Terry Bruce, Hoschton, and Lynn and Kimsey Gray Sr., Pendergrass; brother, Clyde Gaines, Maysville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 25, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Williams officiating. The burial will follow in the Jackson Memorial Park with Casey Gray, Kimsey Gray Jr., David Bach, Raymond Truluck, Gerald Jones, and Gabby Jones honored as pallbearers. HOSCHTON – James Leroy Garner, 75, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, following a brief illness.

Leroy served in the United States Army as a paratrooper. He was a faithful member of Rehoboth Baptist Church for 40 years and Grove Level Baptist Church in recent years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Sandra (Ross) Garner; sons, James Darrell Garner (Becki) and Stephen Patrick Garner (Laura); and seven grandchildren, Chase, Taylor, James, Emma, Aaron, Annie, and Ethan.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at A.S. Turner & Sons in Decatur. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 27, at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Tucker.

ATHENS – Leroy Leonard Edwards, 85, died Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Gentiva Hospice, IPU.

Mr. Edwards was born in Commerce, the son of the late Oris and Margia Thurmond Edwards. He was a member of West End Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army. He was retired as a painter. Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Shelton Edwards.

Survivors include his daughters, Rhonda Perry, Commerce, and Sandra Syfett, Athens; sons, Steven Whitley and Gerald Whitley, both of Athens; sister, Louise Gordon, Maysville; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

WINDER – Charles Thomas Moss, 69, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016.

Charles was a member of Bogart Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon. He earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Gainesville College. Charles served his country in The United States Army as a military policeman and retired from the Georgia State Patrol as an Investigator. He was a member of Outdoors Without Limits. Mr. Moss was preceded in death by his parents, E.J. and Hattie Jump Moss; and three brothers, Loy Moss, Paul Moss and Guy Moss.

Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Barbara Clemmons Moss, Winder; two sons, Kevin Moss (Carissa), Statham, and Scott Moss, Winder; two daughters, DeeDee Barnes, Winder, and Michelle Moss, Winder; a brother, James Moss (Peggy), Dallas; two sisters, Ruth Poole and Minnie Lee Raynes, both of Jasper; six grandchildren, Christopher Barnes, Bree Simmons, Kylie Moss, Tori Moss, Tyler Moss, and Katelynn Moss; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden Barnes and Aalyiah Barnes.

NICHOLSON – Daniel Lee Sailors, 89, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at his residence.

He was the son of the late Reverend Ben and Lula Godfrey Sailors. Mr. Sailors was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Beck Sailors; daughter, Sandra Sailors; brothers, Benjamin and Samuel Sailors; and step-daughter, Debbie Wood Wilbanks.

Mr. Sailors was a lifelong resident of Nicholson, and loved his community, where he served in many capacities. He served with the City of Nicholson, the Nicholson Water Authority, and the Nicholson Fire Department. He was also a World War II veteran, and a member of the Homer American Legion Post #215. He loved his family, friends, and his church, New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Wood Sailors; son, Dan Scott Sailors (Ronda), Jefferson; step-son, Ray Wood, Commerce; nine grandchildren, Kasi Thurmond (Scotty), Hailey and Mallory Sailors, Matthew Potts, Seth Potts (Brittany), Wesley Wilbanks (Sarah), Justin Wood, Katie Garner (Forrest), and Kyle Wood; and five great-grandchildren, Anna Kate and Mary Grant Thurmond, Hudson and Avery Wilbanks, and Locke Potts III.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 9, at 11 a.m. from New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Stowers and Junior Sosebee officiating with the interment following in Howington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, June 8, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m.

DANIELSVILLE – Jimmie F. Duncan, 83, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, following long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Born in Nicholson, he was the son of the late Charlie and Maude Duncan. Jimmie served in the United States Navy in the early 50’s, attended Reinhardt College (where he met Joyce) and the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelors and Masters in Education. He and Joyce were married in 1956. He served as a teacher and school principal for over 33 years, primarily in Madison County, most notably as the principal of North Madison Middle School. While at North Madison, he also coached boy’s baseball and girl’s basketball for many years, influencing generations of student-athletes. After retiring from education, Jim worked for 10 years with Athens-Clarke County Government. A devoted Christian, Jim was a long standing member and servant at Moon’s Grove Baptist Church.

Husband, father, brother, uncle, teacher, principal, coach, friend, life-long Christian, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Naval Seaman, Jim Duncan lived his life committed to God, family, country, education and community.

Survivors include the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Joyce Duncan; daughter, Susan Gravely and son-in-law Mike Gravely; son, Chris Duncan and wife Lisa Duncan; four grandsons, Patrick Thomas Cleary and wife Melanie Webb Cleary, Andrew Charles Duncan Cleary, Matthew Foxx Duncan, and Jacob Commanday Duncan; sister Margaret Ward; and cherished nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10, at 11 a.m., at Moons Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Dial officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Lord & Stephens Danielsville Chapel.

BRASELTON – Jack C. Cook, 84, died suddenly on Saturday, June 4, 2016.

Jack was born in Rockford, Ohio, and had lived in the Atlanta area the past 43 years. He retired as Facilities Manager at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge, and also a member of 12Stone Church. Jack was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially college basketball (March Madness) and PGA Golf. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Anne Schaser Cook; and son, Chris Cook.

Survivors include children, Stacy Lacy, Braselton; son, Carey Cook and wife, Nancy, Vernon Hills, Ill.; grandchildren, Paul Cook and wife, Kristina, Brian Cook and wife, Paula, Austin Lacy, and Steven Lacy; great-grandchildren, Andrew Cook, Tegan Cook, Paige Cook, Julia Cook, and Peter Cook; and brother, Gary Cook and wife, Sue, Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Blackwell was born in Jefferson, the son of the late James Curtis Blackwell and Elizabeth Ricks Blackwell. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and was a retired manager with United Parcel Service.

Mr. Bradberry was born in Athens, the son of the late Robert Donald and Grace Bettis Bradberry. Mr. Bradberry was retired from Jackson County, where he was a corrections officer. Mr. McDonald was born in Statham, the son of the late Walter A. McDonald and Mae Greenway McDonald. Mr. McDonald was a retired engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation, and along with his wife and two sons, operated a successful cattle farm. Mr. McDonald was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Winder, the Crusader Sunday School Class, the Jackson County Cattleman’s Association, and the DOT Retiree’s Association. Mr. McDonald was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Germany. Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Mae Allene McDonald; brothers, Alan McDonald, William McDonald, Fred McDonald; and step-mother, Ollie Austin McDonald.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betsy Hays McDonald, Winder; sons, Jimmy McDonald and his wife Anne, Winder, and Andy McDonald and his wife Stephanie, Winder; four grandchildren, Beth, Susan, Will, and Charlie; five nieces; and three nephews.

GILLSVILLE – Susan Hardman Strickland, 69, entered in to rest Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

Mrs. Strickland was born in East Point, Ga., the daughter of the late Elmo and Anita Worth Hardman. She attended Massey Business School, was a realtor with Chapman – Hall Realtors, and a member of the Holly Springs United Methodist Church. Susan led a vibrant and active life, working in real estate, taking trips both domestically and around the world, and was active in her local community and the world of animal rescue. Susan was the vice president and co-founder of Dirt Road Doggies Rescue. Susan loved animals of all kinds, but dogs and horses held a very special place in her heart. Susan never turned her back on a stray. Her family supported her countless endeavors to save the broken and forgotten four legged friends for many years.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Clayton Strickland, Sr., Gillsville; daughter, Gabi Strickland Osterberger and her husband Michael, Pendergrass; son, Gus Strickland Jr., Gillsville; and a brother, Mickey Hardman and his wife Debbie, Powder Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, from the Holly Springs United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, June 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Dirt Road Doggie Rescue, P.O. Box 79, Gillsville, Georgia, or to the Holly Springs United Methodist Church, 7441 Holly Springs Road, Pendergrass, Georgia 30567.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND – Ouida Boyd Walker, 69, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at her residence, with her husband Joe and their son Wes by her side.

Ouida was born in LaFayette, Ala. on November 28, 1946. The daughter of the late Robert T. Boyd, and Glenda Cotton Boyd, Ouida lived much of her formative life in Jefferson, Ga.

Ouida was a remarkably successful woman, wife, mother, and grandmother. Moreover, she was an educator for ten years, and then created successful businesses in both Massachusetts and Florida. Ouida, a dedicated community leader, served as a Board Member for the Boston, Mass. Junior League, President of the Princeton, NJ YWCA, and Board Member for Jacksonville, Fla. Symphony Guild.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Joe Walker; son Wes, his wife Susanne, their children Benjamin (12), and Katherine (10). Bethesda, Md.; sister, Elizabeth Boyd Danis, Hingham, Mass.; and Butterbean, Ouida’s English Bulldog (7).

In accordance with her wishes, the immediate family held a private gathering, after which she was cremated.

For those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Ouida’s honor, the family would ask that you do so to the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Mass., that not only play a pivotal role in her care and treatment, but also continues to conduct break-through clinical research to defeat cancer.
