Stanley Hodsdon (08-03-16)

Stanley Norman Hodsdon, 91, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at his residence in Athens.

Mr. Hodsdon was born in Wales Maine on October 18, 1924, the youngest son of the late Harvey Willis Hodsdon and Grace Violet Higgins. He was preceded in death by both older brothers, Ed Harvey Hodsdon and Ray Willis Hodsdon; his wife, Edith Velda Edwards Hodsdon; and his youngest son, Eric Richard Hodsdon.

Survivors include his son, Stan Patrick Hodsdon (wife Jan); grandson, Russell Patrick Hodsdon (wife Ashley); granddaughter, Yvonne Michelle Hodsdon, and two great-granddaughters in Bad Windsheim, Germany; as well as several nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Stan was a WWII veteran with two years combat fighting in six major battles to include the battle of Hurtgen Forest, which was later depicted in the movie “When Trumpets Fade”. He was wounded in one of the battles with shrapnel to the back but was treated in the field and continued to fight on. Stan was involved in the liberation of the first concentration camp at Ohrdruf, Germany, where he saw Generals Eisenhower and Bradley after the liberation. He later saw Eisenhower at a Washington Senators ballgame at Connie Griffith Stadium and called down to him saying “Hey Ike, I was with you at Ohrdruf.” President Eisenhower heard him and told his people to bring that young man down to talk with him, where they talked for some 30 minutes. Stan asked why the US forces stopped instead of fighting forward to get credit that the Russians later claimed and Ike told him it wasn’t about getting credit, it was about saving lives of our young men.

After the war Stan married Velda Edwards Hodsdon, who was later to become director of nursing at BJC Hospital in Commerce. After receiving his Master’s Degree in Education from Florida State University, they moved to Commerce in 1951, where Stan took the job as principal of Commerce Grammar School. He later went into the insurance and real estate businesses, which he continued until his retirement in 2000. Stan was active in community and veterans affairs throughout his life, as well as contributing to the Boy Scouts in many capacities. He served as Post Service Officer assisting veterans and dependents with claims. He served as post commander of the American Legion six times, and district adjutant once. He is a past member of the Honor Society 40–8. He served as V.F.W Post Commander 16 times, District Commander once, and also as Department Judge Advocate. He served on State and National committees and is a member of the V.F.W. Hall of Fame. He is recipient of the V.F.W Distinguished Service Award and a member of the V.F.W Honor Society — Military Order of Cooties. He served as both D.A.V Post and District Chaplain and is a member of the D.A.V. Honor Society — Trench Rats. He has been affiliated with the Boy Scouts since 1936 and served in most every capacity in troop committees, district and council. He has been a district commissioner and a summer camp director for Okefenokee Area Council and served as North East Georgia Area Council Advancement Chairman for several years. He has been awarded the Eagle Scout Award, the Silver Beaver Award, the Scouter Training Award, and the Region Six Award. His civic contributions include chairing American Red Cross Blood Drives, past president Commerce Kiwanis Club, past member Jackson County Planning Commission, past member North East Georgia Area Planning and Development Commission, past member and chairman of Georgia Advisory Committee for State Planning and Community Development, past member of the Georgia State Planning Commission, and past president of the Banks Jackson Board of Realtors.

In Stan’s memory the family suggests contributions to the American Red Cross.

Jonathan Dale “Jon” Walker died Friday, July 15, 2016.

He was born March 12, 1993, the son of Tim Granger, and was a graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 2011.

Survivors include two brothers, William Walker and Timmie Walker.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 6, at Crossroads Church of Jackson County, 25 Hawkins Lane, Jefferson. For those that may remember, it used to be Great Skates Rink, where Jon worked and played. It is next to Dairy Queen on Hwy. 129.

Memorial services will begin at 4 p.m. We hope to see his friends there.

PENDERGRASS – Ola Mae Campbell, 82, passed away peacefully at her residence on Monday, August 8, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle Cheek. Ola Mae was an active long-time member of Walnut Fork Baptist Church, where she kept the nursery for 30 plus years. She always thought of all the children as her own. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her brother, Frank Cheek, Jr.; sister, Virginia Davis; and granddaughter, Christina Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, C.H. Campbell, Jr.; son William Campbell; daughters, Vickie West and husband Tommy, Veronica Smith and husband Andy, all of Pendergrass; sister, Latrelle Vickers, Oakwood; brother Russell Cheek, Gainesville; grandsons, Waylon Thomas and wife Courtney, Hoschton, and Jessie Thomas and wife Melissa, Braselton; granddaughter, Andrea Smith, Pendergrass; great-grandson, Jackson Thomas, Braselton; great-granddaughters, Caroline and Elizabeth Sanders, Braselton, and Julia Hut, Hoschton; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 11, at Walnut Fork Baptist Church, 557 Hwy. 60, Hoschton, GA 30548. Pastor Dr. Rusty Newman will be officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel.

JEFFERSON – Janette Merk Johnson, 91, entered into rest Saturday, August 6, 2016.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Commerce, the daughter of the late Hoyt and Alva Garrison Merk. She graduated from Martin Institute, attended Athens Business School, and was a member of Galilee Christian Church. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed a career spanning 38 years as the cashier for Jackson EMC in Jefferson, and at the time of her retirement, was the longest tenured retiree. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Johnson; and a brother, Emory Merk.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Merk Brewer, Athens; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews. and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, from the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with Minister Tom Plank officiating with burial to follow in Jackson Memorial Park, Commerce. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

COMMERCE – Rosemary Lynn Tyson, 61, formerly of Suwanee, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Lynn, and mother, Myree Lynn.

Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Lane Tyson, Commerce; sons, Nathan Lynn and Emily Rose Bartlett, Lilburn, Joshua Charles and Danielle Marie Bartlett, Bozeman, Mont., and Brian Jones, Orlando, Fla.; stepchildren, Jeremy Lanier and Mandy Tyson, Dallas, Ga., and Jamie Andrew and Joh Tyson, Strunk, Ky.; grandchildren, Roselynn Alise Bartlett, Bridger Tyson, and Arlo Tyson; sister, Diana and Jeff Rowlls, Lafayette, Ga.; brothers, Dr. Carl and Kathy Lynn, Sky Valley, Ga., and William and Kathryn Lynn, Locust Grove; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mrs. Tyson was born October 28, 1954, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of Shadowbrook Baptist Church in Suwanee prior to moving to Commerce. “Everyone she came in contact with she touched and left a positive lasting impression which showed her love for her family and people!”

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, August 14, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Pastor Rev. Rick Patchin officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

PENDERGRASS – Virginia Toney Shaw, 72, entered into rest Sunday, August 7, 2016.

Mrs. Shaw was born in Hall County, the daughter of the late James Anthony Toney and Ethel Lucille Godfrey. Toney, was a member of the Walnut Fork Baptist Church and the Spiritual Seekers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Shaw was retired from Fresh Frozen Foods, and was preceded in death by her husband, John Harold Shaw.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Allan Shaw and his wife Sherri, Pendergrass, and Brian Mark Shaw, Austin, Texas.; one sister, Annette Bunnell, Murrayville; a brother, Charlie James Toney, Powder Springs; and two grandchildren, Dylan Shaw and Savannah Shaw.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 10, from the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with Dr. Rusty Newman officiating with burial to follow in the Walnut Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. WINDER – Mitch Wilkerson, 55, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016.

He was a member of The Huntington’s Disease Support Group. Mr. Wilkerson was preceded in death by his father, Raymond T. Wilkerson.

Survivors in addition to his mother, Louetta Wilkerson, Dover, Ariz., include his wife, Belinda Walls Wilkerson, Winder; a daughter, Cassidy Wilkerson, Monroe; son, Brandon Wilkerson, Winder; a brother, Barry Wilkerson (Melissa), Buford; two sisters, Wanda Crowe (Leigh), Statham, and Angela Sauls (Russ), Winder; and five grandchildren, Katelyn Nash, Dakota Dilbeck, Serenity Kirk, Noah Kirk, and Eric Wilkerson.

TOCCOA – Mildred Greemon Dalton, 88, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016, at Friendship Nursing Home.

She was the daughter of the late Arthur Loyd and Alice Smith Greemon. Mrs. Dalton was born November 17, 1927, in Easley, S.C., having lived in Banks and Stephens County most of her life. She was retired from WABCO with 33 years of service and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, TomE Bradford Dalton; son, Roger Dale Dalton; brother, Fred Greemon; and a sister, Betty Templeton.

Survivors include a son, Winferd Lynn Dalton, Toccoa; two grandchildren, Jacob Dalton and Betsy Dalton; brother, Ricky Greemon, Baldwin; and sister, Imogene Seelow, Bremerton, Wash.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 16, at 2 p.m., at Mountain View Baptist Church in Baldwin, with the Rev. Kenneth McEntire officiating. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Kenneth Gary, Bradley Gary, Allen Whitener, Johnny Poole, David Poole, and Scott Harrison.

MAYSVILLE – Chess Boggan Howard, 87, died Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Howard was born in Greensboro, N.C., the son of the late Robert and Blanche Boggan Howard. He was a member of The Grove and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in World War II. Mr. Howard was a member of Gideons International and was retired from Wrangler. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Constance Thieme.

Survivors include his wife, Linda White Howard, Maysville; sons, Jonathan Howard, Bowling Green, Ky., and Christopher Howard, Jefferson.

BRASELTON – Frank Russell Howland, Jr., 77, passed away Monday, August 15, 2016.

Frank was a United States Army veteran. He was a hunter, fisherman, and loved camping. He was also a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the All Season’s Sportsman Club since 1968 and volunteered with the Georgia Wildlife Federation. Frank retired after over 30 years with Atlanta Gas Light.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jane W. Howland; son, Franklin Howland III, Dacula; daughter, Michele Brown and Shane Helms, Braselton; sisters, Jackie Reeves and husband Joe, Florida, Babette Morris, Tennessee, and Alycia Phillips and husband Fred, Peachtree City; grandchildren, Noelle, Ashley, and Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Wyatt and Clayton; and a host of other relatives.

JEFFERSON – Jeffery Stephen Whitfield, 56, died Tuesday, August 16, 2016.

Jeffery Stephen Whitfield was born in 1960, in San Diego, Calif., and grew up in Jefferson. He graduated from Jefferson City Schools in 1978 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration. Jeff married Cindy Pendergrass Vandeventer in 1983, and together they began a life of adventure and public service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan Eugene Whitfield and Mary Lyle Whitfield.

Jeff served as a Lieutenant with the University of Georgia Police Department for 27 years, most recently mentoring officers as shift commander. He was coordinator of the UGAPD Crisis Intervention Team, with whom he helped students in times of mental health emergency.

Jeff served six years in the Navy Reserve before joining the Army as a medevac pilot and flying in Operation Desert Storm. After completing his military terms, he served as the Chief of the Jefferson Police Department and the Deputy Chief of the Bibb County Schools Police Department. In 1996, Jeff left the police force to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Dothan, Ala., where he was a special agent. After seven years with the FBI, Jeff returned to the UGAPD to be closer to his father and brothers.

In a Red & Black Veteran’s Day profile, Jeff said “I’ve truly been blessed to have been able to do everything on my list of what I wanted to be when I grew up.” He committed his life to serving his community and his country. In his free time, Jeff enjoyed spending time with his family, taking care of his dogs and playing golf.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Cindy; his two sons, Tyler Stephen and Kevin Jeffery Whitfield; three brothers, Ronald Eugene Whitfield (Linda), Raymond Lyle Whitfield (Rhonda), and Timothy Wayne Whitfield (Belinda); and his dog Jake.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 20, at 4 p.m., in the Galilee Christian Church with Minister Tom Plank officiating. Members of the University of Georgia Police Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. The burial will follow in the Evans Memory Gardens. The visitation will be held on Friday, August 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home.

He was a native of North Wilkesboro, N.C. and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Wiley was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Emma Rupard Moore; his wife, Lola Fern Moore; and a grandson, Jimmy Petty.

Survivors include a son, Robin Moore, Hoschton; two daughters, Wanda Pitts (John), Winder, and Brenda Petty, Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, John Moore, Thomasville, N.C., R.V. Moore, Vale, N.C., and Billy Moore, Thomasville, N.C.; three sisters, Gladys McIntyre, Thomasville, N.C., Margaret Wilson, Vale, N.C., and Cordie Callahan, Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Angela Hicks, David Petty, and Adam Pitts; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 20 at 2 p.m., at Liberty Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro, N.C. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be held in the church cemetery.

SANFORD COMMUNITY – Eunice “May” Pittman Edwards, 83, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016.

Mrs. Edwards was a native of Athens, Clarke County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Harvey Neil Edwards.

May was the daughter of the late William Fred Pittman, Sr. and Marina Zenobia Marlow Pittman of the Sanford Community.

Survivors include a brother, William Fred Pittman, Jr. (Faye), Smyrna; a sister, Glennie Dee Pittman Doster, Orlando; two sons, David Gordon (Barbara), Sanford Community, and Blakely Glenn, Marietta; five grandchildren, Marina (Wendel), Erik (Nami), Nathaniel (Talia), Terra (Frank), and Amanda; two great-grandchildren, Enzo and Payton; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Edwards was a graduate of the Athens High School Class of 1950 and held an associate degree from Oglethorpe University in Management.

Mrs. Edwards held many positions in life, most recently working as an administrative secretary at Ayco Corp. in Atlanta. After retiring, she was a real estate investor and full-time grandmother. She and Neil were charter members of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. During its formative years, they helped fund the Athens Folk Music and Dance Society at the Benefactor Level for many years.

Mrs. Edwards was a loving wife and mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. She was a member of Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church of the Sanford Community.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 19, at Bernstein Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 20, at Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 6625 Nowhere Rd., Hull, Ga. 30646. Interment will be at the Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Donald Keith Veater died early Saturday, August 13, 2016, at the age of 48.

Donald was born in Norman, Okla., on June 18, 1968. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He also received a Master of Education from UGA in 1998. Donald was honored to be a torchbearer for the 1996 Summer Paralympics. A former resident of Stone Mountain, he was residing in Comer at the time of his death. Donald was preceded in death by his mother, Bettye laMar Speaks Veater; and father, Joel Gaston Veater.

Survivors include a sister, Lee Beth Burge (Chet); three nieces: Emma, Elizabeth, and Ella Burge; and one nephew, Manuel Burge.

For the last 12 years of his life, Donald received loving care from Kristy Mahaffey, Amanda Parten, and Brenda Parten, and enjoyed being part of their large and entertaining family.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, at Lord and Stephens Madison Chapel, 963 Highway 98 E, Danielsville. Visitation one hour prior.

AUBURN – Keith Freeland, 56, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2016.

He was a native of Dublin, Ga. Mr. Freeland was preceded in death by his parents, Reno and Mattie Lou Freeland.

Ronald Kenny Neuman, 66, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2016, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Neuman was the son of the late Leona Hager and George Neuman. Mr. Neuman was born in Detroit, Mich. and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. at the age of nine. He attended school in Ft. Lauderdale, graduating from Pompano Beach High School, where he was on the football and swim teams. At the age of 15, Mr. Neuman met the love of his life, Mary Sue Groover. They were married in 1967 and November 18th would have been their 49th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the Armed Forces and served his country proudly. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for being wounded in the Vietnam War.
The Neumans moved to Lawrenceville in 1973, where they both completed their college degrees while raising two children. For the past 19 years they have resided in Braselton. He loved his family and was always up for a game of tennis or billiards. His true love was spending time at his lake house with his family and friends. Mr. Neuman found his niche in specialized tooling for industrial applications. After years of success as an engineer and a successful business owner, he retired. He also was involved in the development and growth of land in the Braselton area.

Mr. Neuman leaves behind a family who adored him, his wife Mary, his son John (Julie Tanner), their children Austin and Sydney, who reside in Suwanee, and his daughter, Kimberly Neuman Salamone (John) and their two sons, Drake and Luke, who reside in John’s Creek. He is also survived by his brother, Don (Pam) Neuman, John’s Creek; and sister, Denise (Freddie) Harkins, Jasper, Ga.; along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford on Saturday, August 27. Family visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service.

Terri Seagraves, 54, passed away August 24, 2016.

A native of Comer, she was the daughter of the late Erwin and Sandra Hardeman. She graduated in 1980 from Madison County High School and was employed with the Madison County School System for many years.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Howell G. Seagraves, Jr.; four children, Alicia Seagraves (Daniel James) May, Nicholson, Mallory Seagraves, Ila, Blaine (Jenna) Seagraves, Comer, and Matt (Amber) Kennison, Canton; grandchildren, Leena Kate May, Roman Seagraves, Izzy Kennison, and Abigail Kennison; sister, Paula (Curtis) Drake, Comer; and niece, Autumn Drake.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 27, at 11 a.m. at Comer Baptist Church with the Rev. Gordon Rhoden and Mr. Matthew Kennison officiating. Interment will follow at Comer Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, August 26, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

JEFFERSON – Lewis “Lewy” Wofford, 77, entered into rest Friday, August 19, 2016.

Mr. Wofford was born in Flowery Branch, Ga., the son of the late Hoyt and Maudell Gilleland Wofford. He was of the Methodist denomination, and was a United States Army Veteran. “Lewy,” as he was known to his friends and co-workers, retired after 37 loyal and dedicated years of service with the Sinkwich Family and Northeast Sales and Distributing. Mr. Wofford was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Allen Wofford.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Payne Wofford, Jefferson; two daughters, Laura Brock and her husband Nelson, Jefferson, Lou Ann Puckett and her husband William, Jefferson; son, Lewis Wofford and his wife Lisa, Acworth; brother, Earl Wofford and his wife Deborah, Comer; and five grandchildren, Katie Roth and her husband Joe, Lee Brock, Will Puckett, Drew Puckett, and Christopher Wofford.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 22, from the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Ross Wheeler officiating. Burial was in the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. Gentlemen honored as pallbearers were Nelson Brock, Lee Brock, Will Puckett, Drew Puckett, Lew Wofford, Richard Smith, and Earl Wofford.
