OAKWOOD – Douglas D. Walker, 91, a native of Greensboro, N.C. and proud World War II Veteran, was called home to our Lord on Wednesday, August 22, 2012.

He was born October 25, 1920, the son of the late James and Maude of Greensboro, N.C. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II. He retired from Providence Washington Insurance Company, where he was the vice president of the claims department and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Oakwood. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Walker; and siblings, Vestal Walker, Marion Plager, Betty Simmons, and Peggy Barker.

Survivors include a brother, Wendell “Jack” Walker and his wife Emily; many nieces and nephews; his special Georgia family; his beloved “daughter,” Shawn Ripko-Hydrick and husband Bryan; granddaughter, Rachel Theresa Ripko; the entire Mauro family, especially Brianna Mauro; and his church family at Christ Lutheran Church in Oakwood.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m., Friday, August 24, from the chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home with interment following at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, N.C. at 3 p.m., Saturday, August 25. Pastor Andy Seibert will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday, August 24, at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Douglas Walker Memorial Fund to benefit Children’s Programs at Christ Lutheran Church, 3612 Old Oakwood Rd., Oakwood, GA 30566.

Memorial Park South Funeral Home, Flowery Branch, is in charge of arrangements.
